Plate Tectonics and PCT

[From Bruce Gregory (981021.1450 EDT)]

R. T, Chamberlin wrote in 1928, "If we are to believe in Wegener's
hypothesis [of continental drift] we must forget everything which has been
learned in the last 70 years and start all over again." The crucial data
that led to the widespread acceptance of the modern version of Wegener's
theory--plate tectonics--appeared in the mid-1960's.

Interesting. What allowed then to get the crucial data then
as opposed to 1928?, and do you see a correlate to PCT
besides the quote by Chamberlin?
