Dear Gary Cziko,
Noticed your list in the Principia Cybernetica project. I believe you may
have contact with students and other folks who may benefit from this
message.
The Department of Management at the US Air Force Academy is considering
opening a tenure-track position in the general area of systems theory.
Our school is an undergraduate four-year program of roughly 4000 students
who specialize in one of 24 areas, one of which is management. We've
recently redefined our mission as preparing graduates with adaptive
capacity to manage in the information age. Little wonder our pressing
need for systems talent.
Our equivalent of a personnel committee wants to make such a position
available to begin in the summer of 1997 if we can show them a sufficient
number of qualified candidate resumes. A description of that position, an
awkward first draft, follows below.

Position Announcement
At the Assistant Professor Level: an earned Ph.D. (completed no later
than 1 June 1997) in Management, Business Administration, Sociology, or a
closely related field with both a teaching and research emphasis on the
social systems aspects of those disciplines. Applicants must have a
variety of master's or doctoral level course work in business or
management. In addition to quantitative methods, formal training in
qualitative methods is required, to include course work and research.
Qualitative methods course work or research must involve a variety of
techniques such as participant observation, content analysis, ethnography,
and others.
Course work of research in systems theory, information theory,
cybernetics, organizational learning, or the philosophy of science is
strongly desired. Formal exposure to at least some of the following
authors or their ideas is desired: Ashby, Bateson, Beer, Bertalanffy,
Bohm, Bongard, E. Boyer, Checkland, Chomsky, Churchman, Delong, Drucker,
Hofstadter, Kuhn, Perry, Popper, Russell, Shannon, Simon, Weick,
Whitehead, Wiener.
Applicants must show a definite promise of growth and development in
teaching, research, service, and other scholarly and professional
activities.
At the Associate Professor Level: the preceding criteria apply. In
addition, applicants must have five years of professional experience to
include full-time university level teaching, and show evidence of progress
in research, service, and other scholarly and professional activities.
