Possible 2004 site in Chicago

[From Rick Marken (2003.08.15.1135)]

Dick Robertson,2003.08.15.1232CDT) –
This is especially to Bob Summer, as ex officio, and my committee members,
Shelley Roy and Bruce Abbott. But since I don’t seem to have Shelley’s
and Bruce’s individual addresses I’ll send this to the net at large.

I’m copying this to Shelley.

Others of you might want to comment on it anyway.

I have got “penciled in” ( tentatively reserved) “Loyolla at
the Cenacle” in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago for July 14-18, 2004.
They have 45 singles rooms, three couples rooms and a small suite.
In addition they have 11 doubles rooms, thus accomodatins for about 60+
overall.

“Some rooms have private baths.” “The building is air conditioned
and there is a charming court garden, Chapel, 2 large meetings rooms and
4 small breakout rooms…Cost of meeting rooms included in
group stays.”
Prices are: 60/night /person for doubles room( i.e. for 22
people); 80/night/p for singles room. This includes three meals perday.
The rep claims they have home cooking (probably by the Cenacle Sisters,
who run the place). They are not particularly set up for banquets,
but she told me they could set us up for Sat. dinner in a room to ourselves,
which sounds like it could work. All audio equip’t would come to
85/day , except they don’t have the Power point screen. I think someone
could bring one or we could rent one.
This looks like we could bring costs in about where they were in LA,
unless when I see the details something is awry. There would have
to be a registration fee differential for singles rooms, but I would propose
we subsidize a little of that. She said they especially cater to non-profit
groups like ours.

Here are the pros and cons.

I didn’t see any cons!

Some of them depend on how you view it.

The location is in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago, about 10"walk
from Lake Michigan and beach. 10" from Lincoln park zoo; 20-25" Lake
shore bus ride to Chicago downtown, Art Institute, Field Museum, Planetarium
and Aquarium, etc.

(or get off on the way, to Navy Pier: exhibition center, Shakespeare
Center, etc.)
It is reachable by 35-40" Metra train ride from either OHare or Midway
aiports, with

five block walk or 10 " bus or cab ride at the end. Train fare is $1.50
plus 25 or 50 cents for bus trx. Metra trains run on weekends.
Cab ride would take about same time, but cost about $35.00 Amtrack
at Union Station, then 20" bus ride or cab ride to Cenacle house.
Ditto for Greyhound bus station. Airport express limo from OHare
$16 ea for 2 persons., from Midway $18 ea for 2 persons.

I haven’t seen the site yet. That would be the next step.
Shall I look?

You betcha!
