Profilling and casting nets

[From Dick Robertson,2000,10,19,1520CDT]

Weeding out a stack of old magazines I came across an article, "Just
doing our job, anatomy of a media lynching," (Brill's CONTENT, Aprill,
2000, p.86ff.) about the "media lynching" of Richard Jewell. The
article demonstrated it as a clear case of misapplication of profiling.
It struck me that there have been a lot of publicized instances of the
damaging consequences of profiling, of many sorts, lately. Then it
struck me that these are classic examples of the misapplication of
statisitical results to individual cases that Bill Powers, Phil Runkel
and other PCTers have castigated for so long.

Best, Dick R.
