Proposals Concerning PCT for the AAAS 2019 Annual Meeting

At the bottom of this message is a copy of a request for proposals for sessions and workshops at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to be held in Washington, DC, February 14-18, 2019. This seems like an opportunity to spread the word about PCT. Â

 As you will see if you go to the link, there are 4 kinds of sessions/workshops that PCTers might focus on:

1. A 90-Minute Symposium Format - 3 speakers for 20 minutes on topics and projects with broad appeal, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A

  1. A 90-Minute Discussion-Focused Format -where a moderated panel of 2-3 speakers give short presentations (10 minutes each), followed by a longer (60 minute) discussion period with the audience or in small groups.

  2. A 10-minute Flash Talk Format - 1 speaker only per submission on any novel and inspiring topic relevant to those attending - a big idea that can be presented in 10 minutes. (with a video of a polished, well-organized prior talk being required as part of the proposal).

  3. Career Development Workshops - up to 3 presenters - 90 minutes in length.

If you would like to submit a proposal directly to AAAS for a session or a workshop, please do so (with a cc to me for purposes of coordination). Otherwise, if you would like to share ideas for speaking as an individual at either a PCT-focused 90-Minute Symposium or 90-Minute Discussion, please let me know and perhaps we can organize something. One way or the other, the submission deadline for proposals is April 19, 2018, so fast action is needed if any proposals are to be submitted.

Submit a Session Proposal for the 2019 AAAS Annual Meeting

The AAAS Annual Meeting is the world’s largest multidisciplinary science gathering, with exciting scientific sessions, renowned speakers, and valuable networking opportunities.

Scientific session and career development workshop proposals are now being accepted for the AAAS Annual Meeting. The 2019 meeting will take place February 14-18, 2019 in Washington, DC.

Submission Deadline: April 19, 2018

The 2019 meeting theme—Science Transcening Boundaries—exxplores ways science is bringing together people, ideas, and solutions from across real and artificial borders, disciplines, sectors, ideologies, and traditions.

We especially welcome proposals specifically addressing the interdisciplinary research challenges of:

  • Infection control (in addition to ‘traditional’ medical research into antimicrobial resistance, also addressing how the social sciences are used to understand how populations interact with the issue)
  • Living with environmental change (including how engineering, physics, earth and social sciences, finance and politics can help us as a species to successfully adapt)
  • Plastics and other waste (e.g. not just the scale of its spread and impact, but alternate technologies, reclamation, etc. – incorporatingg a mix of the physical, life and social sciences)
  • Food security (not just agricultural productivity, but food storage and distribution through transportation networks, better designed cities, reduced packaging and waste, and faster transit times from farm to fork)
  • Meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (e.g. including international capacity building in research and education)
  • Research in areas ‘beyond sovereign governments’: deep oceans, upper atmosphere, space, polar regions (international collaboration, engineering, physics)

Please consider submitting a proposal to present your research to the multidisciplinary community of AAAS Annual Meeting attendees. This is a unique opportunity to speak across sectors and disciplines, and amplify the impact of your work.
