Re; Mary

Dear Bill,

I have been away and only saw today your sad news about Mary. I am
so, so sorry for your loss, and the rest of our loss as well.

It has been 10 years or more since I have seen you or Mary in person, but
I can still hear the tone of her laughter and voice, and see the sparkle of her
smile and eyes. It is clear – as Bob Summer recently remarked – that
she deeply enjoyed “living next to the fountain” of this PCT odyssey and
drinking from that fountain with you.

I have only a pale glimmer of the grief wrapping around and inside you. I know
when I told Karen the news, I could barely speak. What do you do when your
soul has wandered off?

I want you to know that our thoughts, and tears, are with you. You and Mary
have been such givers – of insight, humor, warmth, & rejoinder – to so many
of us. It helps me affirm that Giving is so much at the heart of Life… whether
by Design or (what would be still more miraculous) by Emergence.

I think the past few days, with their outpourings of remembrance and chordal
resonance in so many people, show that a Gift can be stronger than Death.

May you keep drawing from her strength,

Erling
