Reference Level Addendum :-)

From [Marc Abrams (972312.1400)

Sorry folks, I sent an incomplete first post please excuse.

_My_ perception of the more recent posts by David G, Tim C, and Mark L with
applying PCT was that they were trying to help the CT's change (if they
wanted to). If you were trying to help them change the _type_ or _kind_ of
"goal", they would _not_ be changing only their _reference Level_, they
would in fact have to _change_ their CV's and their perceptions.

So changing "goals" ( meaning, type or kind of CV, not just intensity)
reqiures a _restructuring of perceptions_ up and down the _entire_
hierarchy. Is it a wonder that change is difficult both to understand and
to sustain?

Now :-), What am I missing?

Again, a happy holiday to all

Marc

I'm not sure Marc, but if we're talking about a closed causal loop then it
certainly sounds reasonable to suggest that if you change one aspect you
necessarily change other aspects.

The point I would like to make is that when I'm using the MOL with someone,
I'm not _trying_ to do anything and I'm certainly not trying to change
them. If I'm trying to do anything at all, I'm trying to get the process
started. By "the process" I mean a process of a person experiencing
perceptions at one level and then reflecting on those perceptions by
experiencing perceptions at a higher level. Perhaps one of the hardest
parts of this process is having _faith_ in the process to just let the
process do the work. As a therapist it is hard to "back off" and just
"discover" without any ideas of changing or improving or correcting or
fixing .... for me the MOL is just about experiencing.

Does this help?

Cheers,

Tim
