On another list, I was pointed to a 21 minute video by an Indian researcher who conducted a series of experiments called "The Hole in the Wall Experiments." Essentially, he cut a hole in a wall and mounted a PC there and left it for kids to find and play with. The kids taught themselves how to use the PC and they also taught themselves enough English to use the Internet. I think what's going on is partly a process of establishing new, never-before-attained reference signals coupled with reorganization. In a word, learning.
