"It must be repeated loudly and often that just as there is no reasonable
relationship between a service performed and the annual payment of $12
million to an executive or manager, there need not be any direct correlation
between a service rendered and a guaranteed payment to a worker (or would-be
worker) of an amount calculated to provide the necessities of life and a
modicum of dignity." -- Stephen J. Fortunato Jr.

[From Bill Powers (2007.06.07.1210 MDT)]

I enjoyed the reports on the experiment with dogs. More between the ears
than bone, it seems, though I’ve had dogs that made me wonder.

As to the quote, I can’t figure it out. It seems to say that nothing in
nature enforces such relationships, which, natural human beings aside, is
certainly true. But when people do specify such relationships, is there
some natural law that is violated? What is wrong with deciding that
people should be paid at least a living wage for their work, and also
deciding that no management job is worth 500 times what a wage-earner
gets? Aren’t we free to decide such things if that is what we want? Or is
he saying that we are free to decide such things because there is no
objective reason for any particular relationship?

The problem is that I can’t argue with this guy because he writes so
badly that I can’t tell which side he’s on.

Best,

Bill P.
