Breaking into the self-declared (only the two of us here) dyadic solipsism

Enamored of the analogy to biological evolution, anthropologists of the
19th and 20th centuries sought out "primitive cultures" as means of
understanding (they thought) how our prehistoric forebears lived with one
another. They misinterpreted differences in technological complexity as a
kind of gauge of "advancement" on an evolutionary timescale. In this, of
course, anthropology was handmaiden to empire, but that is another story.
The point here is that all human communities have roughly equal time depth.
The relevant question is not which is primitive, but which better
facilitates coordination and enables individuals to avoid conflict with one
another. Some facilitate coordination by means that involve a lot of
conflict, and some avoid conflict but at the expense of "productive"
coordinated effort, so to a degree there is a tradeoff, and I should think
we would more highly value an optimization of both.

Some comments on the exchange itself:

If you are going to attempt to consider problems that are social in
character then it might be helpful to adopt a point of view that
recognizes the social character of human experience.

Economic Value ... is not a property that is assigned to an individual
organism.

Economic value cannot exist in the absence of "patterns of coordinated
reference levels". A reference for how much I am willing to pay for a loaf
of bread or for a computer cannot exist without "patterns of coordinated
reference levels" for buying and selling, probably for manufacture,
distribution, marketing, and much else, and certainly for consuming and
using, all of which are learned and controlled in a social context and can
only exist in a social context. Economic value is determined as much by the
seller as by the buyer, and that concurrently, reciprocally, coordinated,
converging.

Values in my conception are social rather than substantial.

Language, as I have said before, has the same sort of social character. A
screwdriver is a tool for one person. A steamboat is a tool that can only
be used by a crew of people, it cannot possibly be used by one person
alone. Language is like a steamboat rather than like a screwdriver in this
respect: it cannot have come into being in one individual alone; it cannot
be learned or acquired by one person alone; it can be used only socially
(one can speak or write alone only by imagining one's audience or
interlocutor, whom you may fatuously enough be pleased to call your self).
Evidences of the essentially and inherently social character of language
can be multiplied indefinitely.

The references that an individual controls in speaking or writing are to be
modeled as interior to that individual. The language that they speak or
write, however, existed as a social context prior to their birth and will
persist after their death, and must be considered a social reality that is
only fragmentarily and partially captured in talk or modeling of references
in one individual. Competence with language varies, most obviously from
infancy to adulthood, but also from one adult to another. No one individual
knows the entirety of their language, and persons deprived of contact with
fellow speakers of their language lose their ability to speak it. (I think
of the example of a Norwegian woman, immigrated to the United States, who
never became fluent in English, and who over several decades of disuse lost
her competence in Norwegian. She could be fairly said to have no language,
in the usual sense of communicative competence in a language.)

Well, what ever is the case for PCT, the control theory position doesn't
seem to me to be intelligible without a provision for an environment.

However, I think we would agree that the "Out There" where ever that might
be is really in here. Now you seem to be of the opinion that the "in here"

Economic values, I think, are social realities in the sense that language
is. Interestingly, "objective" reality is in a curious way dependent upon
"social" reality, because processes of verification and "intersubjective
agreement" depend upon (and exemplify) "patterns of coordinated reference
levels" that arise from convergence as Martin described it.

The pre-existence of social reality is grossly underestimated in PCT
discussions to date. Assuredly, it exists only by virtue of the control
actions of control systems interacting in a society. But it is perceived by
each of them as perceptions (generalizations, if you will) about the
actions and motivations of others in the society.

For each solipsistic individual, the others exist as a social reality, as
well as occasionally (and perhaps exceptionally) as other individuals. That
social reality is a reality just as surely as what we usually think of as
"objective" reality -- which, as we realize, is the projection of our
perceptions onto the environment, as though the perceptions were the
reality which in fact remains unknowable.

Further, social reality is objective in precisely the same sense of
verification and intersubjective agreement, and, as noted above,
intersubjective agreements constituting social reality are necessarily
prior to any intersubjective agreement about what we might think of as
non-social realities. But truth be told, they too are implicitly in a
social context.

I wish I had said it as well as you have. But, aside from your having said
it better, I think we are in agreement-- which is I think more practical
than trying to _per impossible_ "share" reference levels.

The only changes I would make in what you say involved some typos. my typos,
in my stuff that you quoted.

If control theory is going to be applied in a social context in order to
solve social problems then it seems important that we begin with a social
specification of first principles.

For very good reasons-- such as all of the past failures of attempts to
define a social reality properly-- people may, and probably will, be
extremely suspicious of defining a cultural or social conception of reality
in terms of control theory.

In concise terms-- we have perceptions, and we have conjectures. The
conjecture that reality has a social dimension allows us to make better
sense of our perceptions than alternative conjectures. As a foundation for
this conjecture that reality has a social dimension, a control theory
conception of the character of perceptions and conjectures appears to be a
better conception than the alternatives. And, in this control theory
conjecture there are among other things, perceptions, conjectures and an
environment. I think this makes for a "tight-knit" self-consistent scheme.

Eventually, I expect that this view will become a matter of unreflective
common sense. As, Veblen once said,

This is an interesting argument that we've seen before, which is only
gradually changing form. I'd like to suggest this: any statement about
reality has a problem, in that all each one of us knows of reality consists
of perceptions, and these perceptions exist, according to the model we
mainly agree about, in our heads. The statements in question include
statements about quarks and electrons, and about social realities too.
Whatever statement about anything is made, it is made by a human being
operating with limits on knowledge that I think we all understand and agree
about pretty much. The problem is how to prevent this stark fact from
shutting us down so we can't talk about anything.

Consider these three statements in your post:

1. Martin's sketch of "convergence" of reference values in autonomous
control systems indicated how this process might be modelled in the
individual specimens involved.

2. What is neglected in this approach is, as Bill Williams says in the

The first statement is about a model that is offered to apply to
convergence of reference values. Is there really convergence of reference
values?

The second is about an infant specimen arriving in a world containing
patterns of coordinated reference levels. Are there really patterns of
coordinated reference levels in the world?

The third says the patterns of reference levels are cumulative over time
and change through time. Are they really cumulative, and do they really change?

Something is missing from each of these statements: an indication that the
statement is about a perception in the person making it. It might be said
that we all, here, understand that these are really statements about
perceptions in the speaker, but isn't there some faint hint that the
speaker believes that these are true statements about reality -- or at
least would like others to agree that they are?

I've noticed that in philosophical writings, there is a style of
presentation that seems to bypass ordinary concepts of explanation,
justification, proof, evidence, and so on. It involves making a statement
that calls for the readers's acquiescence, but without anything like
persuasion or justification or deduction. The statement is just supposed to
strike a chord within the reader, so the reader will say to himself, "How
true!"

Unfortunately, this leaves the truth of what is said undiscussed by either
the writer or the reader. This style invites taking things for granted, and
it invites especially _group_ acquiescence without discussion. One result
of this is that anyone who does want to discuss the truth of the statements
before going on is looked at with disdain: "We've already been through all
that and disposed of it."

Somewhere around a century ago, someone decided that in order for purposive
behavior to exist, it would be necessary for the future to affect the
present. Since all right-thinking people agree that this is impossible, it
follows that there is no such thing as purpose. This critique of purpose
has been repeated thousands of times during the past century; it's one of
those standard arguments that is automatically brought up when someone
mentions purpose. It's how all people in the know understand that you deal
with purpose. I've heard and read it countless times. But of course we know
that there is an alternative interpretation..

This argument is one of many that people have acquiesced to without
discussion, simply because they knew the answer came out right, so the
argument must have been right. This is the danger in agreeing to things
just because they strike a chord of agreement in us, making us say,
appreciatively but without thinking, "How true."

I hasten to say that I don't know if the above three statements are true or
false. What I do know is that I hesitate to acquiesce to them, because my
reaction is not "How true," but "Wait a minute." When I say "Wait a
minute," I mean, "Is that really true?"

Take the statement that there are convergent patterns of reference levels
in the world. It may prove true, if anyone could figure out how to test the
idea, that we can discern trends, parallels, similarities in various
dimensions among the reference levels people prove to employ. But we should
never forget Tom Bourbon's demonstration of "learning curves," which are
convergent patterns found in the way people learn new tasks. First, he
showed a slide with this universal learning curve, at first rising ever
faster, then slowing down again to level off at the final asymptote. Then
he showed a second slide with, I think, 12 charts showing actual examples
of learning curves for specific tasks. Not one of them looked anything like
the universal learning curve. If you added them together, they came much
closer. But no actual learning curve fit the "universal" pattern.

I would like to raise the possibility that the convergent patterns of
reference signals may be something like the convergent pattern in the
universal learning curve. If you study how large numbers of people use
language, or principles, or money, or table manners, you will be able to
distill patterns very reliably out of the observations. But why should we
treat this pattern as anything more than the average of how people do
things? If we were to look at how _each_ person behaved in these respects,
we would see, I propose, a continual flux of behavior as each person
interacts with and adjusts to the infinitely varied behavior of those
around him or her. It would of course be possible to sum up, to generalize,
to find average ways of interacting, but could that average way be said to
have caused the variety of behaviors of which it is the average?

I'm not trying to force a conclusion here, only to point out that if we
raise questions rather than acquiescing to things that seem instinctively
true (at first) we may discover that there are other ways of perceiving the
situation, so statements that sound at first like descriptions of Real
Reality are more easily seen for what they are: propositions that require
at least some kind of defense or justification, instead of being _a priori_
truths.

And this brings me back to the original point. Whatever statements we make,
they are statements about our own perceptions. They may be propositions
about reality, but the nearest they can ever come to truth is to be cast in
the form of models which we propose as explanations of observations. Models
we can then test.

So:

1. Martin's sketch of "convergence" of reference values in autonomous
control systems indicated how this process might be modelled in the
individual specimens involved.

What is needed is a model of many individual specimens that includes a
mechanism by which they can influence each other,with a deonstration that
their reference values do in fact (in the modeel) converge to common
patterns rather than just adding up to an average pattern.

2. What is neglected in this approach is, as Bill Williams says in the
later message quoted below

An infant specimen arrives into a context in which there are patterns of
coordinated reference levels.

Needed here is a model in which a pre-existing set of control systems is
joined by a new one, so we can demonstrate how the new entity's reference
signals change in relation to the existing ones. First, of course, we must
establish that the coordinated reference levels are not just averages over
sets of very different reference levels

3. In particular, these patterns of convergence among reference levels that
facilitate coordination and enable individuals more easily to avoid
conflict with one another are cumulative over time, as well as changing
through time.

And the same comment applies: we need a model in which patterns of
convergence can be observed, so we can see if they are cumulative over time
as well as changing through time.

My point is that none of the original three statements involved statements
of fact, physical or social. They involved _proposals_. We always have a
choice when proposals are made: we can say, :Yeah, that strikes me as
reasonable," and acquiesce. Or we can say, "That would be interesting if
true, but before we go on from there we had better find a model that will
work that way, and that fits what people actually do."

In my opinion Bruce Nevin's demonstration at St. Louis did

amount to "at least some kind of defense or justification" for

at least part of the argument that he has presented.

I am not proposing a system of _a priori_ truths, neither if I

understand his argument is Bruce Nevin.

Bruce did the work of presenting, at least in part the

justification for his argument, are you now saying that you reject

what he presented at the St. Louis meeting?

Control systems are not about reducing 'conflict'. Control systems are
about getting what they need and want to minimize error. Because of
this, 'conflict' is the 'norm' among many competing control systems. We
need to understand better ways of 'managing' conflicts because we will
_never_ avoid them and we cannot ignore them. You might side-step one,
but eventually one is going to 'get' you. The 'vision' of a 'happy'
world free of conflict is a fantasy.

human history, and many thousands of years before that. There are
currently, approximately 20+ armed conflicts going on around the world,
and all of them, are not Dubya's fault. :slight_smile: When we find a better way to
deal with our differences without resorting to killing and hurting
others we might have a chance, but control systems are '_ruthless_' in
their pursuit of 'stability' (that is stability for their own little
piece of the world, _without_ care for consequences on other control
systems. Even other control systems in the same entity and supposedly
working toward the same goals.)

I share your hope for a better future, but until we can manage our
conflicts better it will be more of the same. A good place to start
might be on CSGnet. This list has _not_ been a model for conflict
resolution. Maybe some of the answers lie outside the realm of control
theory?

In PCT, the autonomy of an agent derives from the fact that the agent's
goals are specified by higher levels systems within the agent itself. An
outsider cannot determine what the agent wants. Autonomy does not mean "lack
of influence by other agents". In fact, PCT incorporates the influence of
the environment (which includes other agents) on an agent in the form of
disturbances to controlled variables. The CROWD program shows how a
collection of autonomous agents, controlling variables that are influenced
by both inanimate and animate environmental variables (the latter being
other agents), end up producing what an observer sees as organized "social"
patterns, which are analogous to what we call cultural variables.

Thus there is in my understanding nothing that corresponds
to a conception of inter-personal "influence." [in PCT]

Then I'm afraid that your understanding is drastically incorrect. I think
you understanding would be improved considerably if you allow yourself to be
willing to _learn_ how build models in general and models of social
phenomena in particular. A good way to do this would be to work with Bill
Powers on building a model economy.

Very good -- then you agree with me that showing some sort of mutual
"influence" -- some direct effect on behavior -- would be very difficult.

Yes. This is what I hope we can eventually demonstrate with models. The
Crowd program shows this in a very modest but still striking way. The
appearance is that the group of actors cooperates to produce a social
pattern, when in fact the "social" pattern is simply an outgrowth of the
properties of the individual specimens, plus laws of geometry (points which
are equidistant from a common point necessarily lie on a circle). The
active agents are totally independent and unaware of each other except as
obstacles to be avoided: they do not "cooperate" at all. The observer
confuses regular outcomes with intended outcomes.

We will be able to show these effects much better when we have models that
can successfully reorganize. But that is a very hard thing to model within
the current state of our understanding.

In my opinion Bruce Nevin's demonstration at St. Louis did
amount to "at least some kind of defense or justification" for
at least part of the argument that he has presented.

I agree -- Bruce wanted to know at the time whether I considered his
approach to be an application of the test for the controlled variable, and
I agreed that it was. In order to apply this test to the point I was
questioning (shared pattern or group average?), however, one would have to
go through the same test with many speakers of Swedish, paying close
attention to the _differences_ among speakers as well as the similarities.
Clearly there would be many similarities -- otherwise we wouldn't recognize
Swedish as a language -- but the question here is the degree of actual as
opposed to apparent convergence in the controlled variables. I'm fairly
confident that we would find the overall rules of pronunciation, syntax,
and grammar to be ascertainable, but also that we would find that the
individual pronunciations, syntaxes, and grammars vary widely over the
population (though not by the same amount in every dimension).

I think we have to recognize that such convergence as there is arises not
from social forces acting to bring individual members of a society into
conformity, but from the active attempt by the members to control their own
lives (not to mention the lives of others!) in the midst of a lot of others
doing the same thing at the same time in the same space. Language is a
particularly complex example, because we must learn not only to understand
others but to speak so we are understood by them. The understanding by
others is always far from perfect, so they do not do what we expect or want
them to do as a result of our communications, and we must try again and
again in different ways to achieve whatever effect we're after. Add to this
the idea of levels of perception, and Martin Taylor's "layered protocols,"
and it becomes more understandable that we communicate so poorly with each
other (often while under the impression that we're doing very well indeed).

We stop trying to converge with the social patterns of others when we feel
we have accomplished it well enough to satisfy our own goals. For some, and
at certain stages in adolescent life, we want this convergence to be as
close as possible (with peers), while we seek at the same time as much
divergence as possible (from authorities, parents, and foriegn groups). I
think there is a wide range in the degree of convergence considered
sufficient by different people, both in different subcultures and at
different stages of life. Yet if we look only for similarities, we will
ignore the large differences that remain, and conclude that some social
force is at work to make us all the same. In the sense that we all
contribute a little to the average, we all belong to the "same" culture.
But because there is so much variation among us, each of us belongs to a
different collection of identifiable subcultures, and in a larger sense it
can be said that none of us actually belongs in just one culture -- and
none, completely, to any culture.

My own views on the causes of convergence seem so far to be identical to yours.

In PCT, the autonomy of an agent derives from the fact that the agent's

the environment (which includes other agents) on an agent in the form of
disturbances to controlled variables. The CROWD program shows how a

by both inanimate and animate environmental variables (the latter being
other agents), end up producing what an observer sees as organized

patterns, which are analogous to what we call cultural variables.

Do you doubt that they change? I want to know if this is a serious question
before I bother with it.

The most obvious reason that they must be cumulative is evolutionary: they
cannot have sprung into being full-blown when, say, a precocious subset of
the offspring of a band of hominids woke up one morning. Humans did not
always tie their shoelaces with bow knots, the arts of knot tying having
developed by an accumulation of learning, and before that did not put shoes
on their feet. Given this explanatory notion, perhaps no more than a
just-so story, one may be willing to look for evidence for small accretions
in know-how and in custom, in how we learn from one another and make what
seems a good way to do things (or a good thing to do) a part of our own
ways of doing things or one of the things that we ourselves do. The field
of culture contact is especially informative, just because the ways of
doing things and the things that are done are at first obviously different,
and then members of each group begin to adopt some of the ways of the
other. And also rejecting some of the ways of the other, as token of
differentness from "that kind of people", and, often enough, rejecting

I don't know if the above three statements are true or
false. What I do know is that I hesitate to acquiesce to them, because my
reaction is not "How true," but "Wait a minute." When I say "Wait a
minute," I mean, "Is that really true?"

Find out.

Take the statement that there are convergent patterns of reference levels
in the world. It may prove true, if anyone could figure out how to test the
idea, that we can discern trends, parallels, similarities in various
dimensions among the reference levels people prove to employ. But we should
never forget Tom Bourbon's demonstration of "learning curves,"

No one ever claimed that these learning curves are a social reality, a
cultural artifact.

I would like to raise the possibility that the convergent patterns of
reference signals may be something like the convergent pattern in the
universal learning curve. If you study how large numbers of people use
language, or principles, or money, or table manners, you will be able to
distill patterns very reliably out of the observations. But why should we
treat this pattern as anything more than the average of how people do
things? If we were to look at how _each_ person behaved in these respects,
we would see, I propose, a continual flux of behavior as each person
interacts with and adjusts to the infinitely varied behavior of those
around him or her. It would of course be possible to sum up, to generalize,
to find average ways of interacting, but could that average way be said to
have caused the variety of behaviors of which it is the average?

There is a difference between an average and a norm. Put the other way
around, the same could be said of any sequences of performances in accord
with given reference values. The variations in performance could be
averaged, but that average would not be the reference value(s), nor would
the variability prove that there were no reference values.

When you have a socially established norm, individuals can conform to it
(adopt it as a reference value) or not, electively. When the individual
does conform to a norm, others who know the norm recognize it and perceive
the social significance it; when the individual does not, that, too, has a
perceived social significance. There are frequently competing norms, each
of which constitutes nonconformity to the other(s), each of which along
with other norms is associated with the "kind of person" who acts that way.
No averaging can possibly approach an understanding of this, and the
comparison is, as Perry Mason used to say, irrelevant and immaterial.

Whatever statements we make, they are statements about our own perceptions.

This is, as Bill Williams has said, solipsistic. We are not isolated
individuals each building our own simulations. Intersubjective agreement is
possible.

What is needed is a model of many individual specimens that includes a
mechanism by which they can influence each other,with a demonstration that
their reference values do in fact (in the modeel) converge to common
patterns rather than just adding up to an average pattern.

I agree, but failure to do so would not demonstrate that this is false.
There is evidence of very limited cultural norms in mammals and birds, but
not in simpler organisms. I think we are far from being capable of creating
a simulation that is sufficiently complex.

Needed here is a model in which a pre-existing set of control systems is
joined by a new one, so we can demonstrate how the new entity's reference
signals change in relation to the existing ones. First, of course, we must
establish that the coordinated reference levels are not just averages over
sets of very different reference levels

Failure to do so would not demonstrate that this is false, for the same
reason.

3. In particular, these patterns of convergence among reference levels that
facilitate coordination and enable individuals more easily to avoid
conflict with one another are cumulative over time, as well as changing

And the same comment applies: we need a model in which patterns of
convergence can be observed, so we can see if they are cumulative over time
as well as changing through time.

And the same caveat applies, about drawing any conclusions from failure.
But we are not limited to construction of simulations. We can observe and
test people and gather the data that are prerequisite to modelling and
building a simulation, the data that any simulation would have to replicate.

My point is that none of the original three statements involved statements
of fact, physical or social. They involved _proposals_. We always have a
choice when proposals are made: we can say, :Yeah, that strikes me as
reasonable," and acquiesce. Or we can say, "That would be interesting if
true, but before we go on from there we had better find a model that will
work that way, and that fits what people actually do."

Or you can say "Yeah, that strikes me as reasonable, so now I'm willing to
invest the time and energy to gather data about what people actually do,
see if the proposal continues to be consistent with the data, and begin to
understand how a simulation might be organized. Because until I look
carefully and deeply at the data I haven't a clue what I'm talking about."

The crucial thing that is missing in all your perorations is that other
individuals are in the environment of that individual that we have singled
out for observation, and she or he is part of the environment of each of
the others.

That people generalize about others (a generalization is not an
abstraction, nor is it an average) I take as obvious. Perhaps you disagree,
or perhaps you take that as a proposal that must be modeled successfully
before you can entertain it as credible. I propose, then, if you will, that
people perceive the generalizations that they have made or learned about
others as norms to which a given other either conforms or disconforms, and
that we do not often or usually conclude that our generalizations about
people are irrelevant for a given other, many of us perhaps never. Evidence
of discomfort at being unable to "peg" a person suggests that fitting them
into one's generalizations about people is itself a control process. This
is easily tested by what is colloquially thought of as violating someone's
expectations.

When I say that they will be the same, I do not mean that physical
measurements that you or someone else could conduct will come out with
the same readings. I mean (to repeat what I said earlier) that a given
person will perceive them as the same, and that you will perceive their
reports that they are the same. We are not talking about the continua of
physical phenomena, we are talking about discrete perceptions, where
these sounds or this sequence of marks are perceived as this word or that
word. Language and culture are entirely on the binary side of the fence,
however much their performance is among the continua of physical
phenomena.

Nor am I talking about the meaning or the understanding of that sentence
being the same for you and for some other person, or for any two people.
(The only evidence that meanings are the same or not is in consequent
words that people say and things that they do, which are not themselves
meanings, but rather have their own meanings.)

I’ll repeat an account I have summarized previously on the net.
Eventually its significance will be apparent. In the 19th century, one of
the distinguishing features of the dialect where I live, aside from
retention of postvocalic r, was the raised and centralized position of
the first part of the diphthong /au/ in about, loud. (You
hear this frequently in Canadian dialects.) This had been gradually
merging with the more open /a/ heard in mainland dialects. This broader
sound, along with loss of postvocalic r (pahk the cah in Hahvahd Yahd),
had spread from dialects south of London over to the cities of the
American colonies, and thence spread to more rural areas. The older
pronunciations persisted in only a few regions, and were fading even
there. However, after the whaling trade died and as tourism became more
of a factor around the turn of the century, the traditional pronunciation
began a resurgence. The really puzzling thing was that the /ai/ diphthong
came along with it, in words like knife, slide, where it
had never been recorded in any dialect of English, certainly not in New
England. In a study that Bill Labov conducted in the early 1960s, it
turned out that adolescents who were leaving the Island for college or
jobs on the mainland changed their dialect to conform to that of summer
visitors from New York and Boston, while those who were looking ahead to
making their livelihood here continued to speak with the local dialect,
only controlling its distinctive features (as distinct from that of the
visitors) with higher gain, “more conservative than even the
Menemsha lobster fishermen.”

Here, we see evidence of people perceiving and controlling for norms, and
we see evidence for social processes by which norms change.

The rings and arcs and following in lines of the CROWD program are precisely not cultural artifacts, because they are universal, and indeed the model shows why they are universal. Cultural norms, “social realities” such as we are talking about, are in their nature not universal, they are conventional, with the conventions differing arbitrarily (or, rather, with historical contingency) from one another, subject to variation and change governed by social factors such as the “what kind of person I present myself to be to others, based on my generalizations about what kinds of people there are” control of self image that seems to be operative in the change in dialect described earlier.

Attend closely to the social reciprocity in that specification: “what kind of person I present myself to be to others, based on my generalizations about what kinds of people there are”. Bear in mind that each of those other persons is concurrently controlling presentation of self image to others in the same way, and controlling generalizations about the others based on their behavior as they control generalizations about the others. It is the loop closure of this reciprocity that is the basis for convergence. And it can only be modeled in individuals concurrently controlling in a public.

I mean the term “a public” in Dewey’s sense: an association of people that carries on some task that is larger or more complex than can effectively be accomplished by an isolated individual. (Thanks to Bill Williams for clarifying this to me last February, in another context.) We are talking about conventionalization and institutionalization in a public. Conventionalization is similar to categorization, in that variants constitute tokens of a type, except that it only occurs in the recognizedly conventional context (in context of speech, what was heard as a sound is perceived as a word) and involves more than one individual. The nudge by the gorilla baby signifies a request to nurse. Institutionalization establishes a convention in a public. Each conventional nudge or poke is unique to each gorilla mother-baby dyad, but the word “please” is institutionalized among speakers of English.

A reminder from Bruce Nevin (2003.03.18 10:58 EST):

Systems that control norms do so with varying reference values – more or less of the given norm – and with varying gain. When you have a socially established norm, individuals can conform to it (adopt it as a reference value) or not, electively. When the individual does conform to a norm, others who know the norm recognize it and perceive the social significance of their conforming to it; when the individual does not, that, too, has a perceived social significance. There are frequently competing norms, each of which constitutes nonconformity to the other(s), each of which along with other norms is associated with the “kind of person” who acts that way, so that in addition to the above a person may conform to a norm which is perceived as conflicting with the first norm, and this may be perceived by others as a particular way of controlling the first norm (aversively). No averaging can possibly approach an understanding of this, and the comparison to the learning curve business is, as Perry Mason used to say, irrelevant and immaterial.

Whatever statements we make, they are statements about our own perceptions.

Of course. But we are not isolated individuals each building our own simulations. Intersubjective test, verification, and agreement is possible. And for science, it is essential.

I agree, but failure to produce such a simulation would not demonstrate that this is false. There is evidence of very limited cultural norms in mammals and birds, but not in simpler organisms. I think we are far from being capable of creating a simulation that is sufficiently complex.

Again, I agree, but again, failure to to produce such a simulation would not demonstrate that this is false.

My point is that none of the original three statements involved statements

of fact, physical or social. They involved proposals. We always have a

choice when proposals are made: we can say, :Yeah, that strikes me as

reasonable," and acquiesce. Or we can say, "That would be interesting if

true, but before we go on from there we had better find a model that will

work that way, and that fits what people actually do."

Or you can say “Yeah, that strikes me as reasonable, so now I’m willing to invest the time and energy to gather (or to look at) data about what people actually do, see if the proposal continues to be consistent with the data, and begin to understand how a simulation might be organized. Because until I look carefully and deeply at the data I haven’t a clue what I’m talking about. Now that I know what we’re talking about, I can at last recognize what constitutes relevant data and begin a serious investigation.”
The crucial thing that has been missing is that other individuals are in the environment of that individual that we have singled out for observation and modeling, and she or he is part of the environment of each of the others. Well, OK, that is present in a limited way in the CROWD program, and in the dyadic stuff. What is missing is the further process of conventionalization that establishes a type-token relationship as a basis for communication, and the process of institutionalization that standardizes conventions in a public.
The starting place for this in the individual is generalization. That people generalize about others I take as obvious. (A generalization is not a category, though it may employ them, and it is not an abstraction, nor is it an average). Perhaps you disagree, or perhaps you take that as a proposal that must be modeled successfully before you can entertain it as credible. I further propose, then, if you will, that people perceive the generalizations that they have made or learned about others as norms to which (they perceive that) a given other either conforms or disconforms. And they indicate to others their own conformity to what they perceive as an accepted norm by means which become conventionalized, and eventually institutionalized within a public in which they participate.
It seems to me that we do not often or usually conclude that our generalizations about people are irrelevant for a given other, and evidence of discomfort at being unable to “peg” a person suggests that fitting them into one’s generalizations about people is itself a control process. This is easily tested by what is colloquially thought of as violating someone’s expectations. In our youth many of us deliberately engaged in violating the expectations of our elders, épater les bourgeois as companions of Baudelaire put it, as a way of resisting … what? What is “peer pressure”? Does this have something to do with conflict between people? By conforming to the generalization that you imagine that the other person perceives you fitting, do you avoid conflict so that you can proceed with tasks that require cooperation? Can the conflict attendant on your violating such an expectation avert a worse conflict by persuading the other person to fit you into a different generalization instead?

Control systems are not about reducing ‘conflict’. Control systems are

about getting what they need and want to minimize error. Because of

this, ‘conflict’ is the ‘norm’ among many competing control systems. We

need to understand better ways of ‘managing’ conflicts because we will

never avoid them and we cannot ignore them. You might side-step one,

but eventually one is going to ‘get’ you. The ‘vision’ of a ‘happy’

world free of conflict is a fantasy.

It is easy to demonstrate that people perceive conflict and control that perception, sometimes to avoid it, sometimes to foster it, and that is what is relevant here.

I’ll doubtless regret having said so much, because people will respond only to those parts that can be made consistent with prior understandings or which seem easiest to dismiss, preserving those understandings. So it goes.

In my opinion Bruce Nevin's demonstration at St. Louis did
amount to "at least some kind of defense or justification" for
at least part of the argument that he has presented.

I agree -- Bruce wanted to know at the time whether I considered his
approach to be an application of the test for the controlled variable, and
I agreed that it was. In order to apply this test to the point I was
questioning (shared pattern or group average?), however, one would have to
go through the same test with many speakers of Swedish, paying close
attention to the _differences_ among speakers as well as the similarities.
Clearly there would be many similarities -- otherwise we wouldn't recognize
Swedish as a language --

Language is a
particularly complex example, because we must learn not only to understand
others but to speak so we are understood by them. The understanding by
others is always far from perfect, so they do not do what we expect or want
them to do as a result of our communications, and we must try again and
again in different ways to achieve whatever effect we're after. Add to this
the idea of levels of perception, and Martin Taylor's "layered protocols,"
and it becomes more understandable that we communicate so poorly with each
other (often while under the impression that we're doing very well indeed).

We stop trying to converge with the social patterns of others when we feel
we have accomplished it well enough to satisfy our own goals. For some, and
at certain stages in adolescent life, we want this convergence to be as
close as possible (with peers), while we seek at the same time as much
divergence as possible (from authorities, parents, and foriegn groups). I
think there is a wide range in the degree of convergence considered
sufficient by different people, both in different subcultures and at
different stages of life. Yet if we look only for similarities, we will
ignore the large differences that remain, and conclude that some social
force is at work to make us all the same.

Imagine an experiment: I read the above sentence, “Martin’s sketch
of ‘convergence’ of reference values in autonomous control systems
indicated how this process might be modelled in the individual systems
involved”, recording it on a sound recorder. At a different time and
place, you record yourself reading it, Mary records herself reading it,
and Bill Williams records himself reading it. (I assume good faith, i.e.
that these are well recorded, clearly spoken, with no masking or
interfering sounds, etc.) We present these sound recordings, repeated in
random order, to a succession of people attending the 2004 CSG
conference. After the playing of the first recording, we ask each time if
it is the same sentence as the previous time. We allow the previous and
the current one to be replayed on request, for comparison. After a time,
we ask the listener to write the sentence. My prediction: All listeners
will judge all the recordings to be readings of the same sentence, the
same arrangement of words. And the written transcripts will be the same.
And this despite manifest differences in the sounds that are
recorded.

We’re a bit off my main point here, but your test brings something to
mind.

You will also get agreement,I predict, if the sentences are subtly
different; parts of the sentence are interchanged, paraphrases are used,
and different words with similar meaning are substituted. My proposal is
that we transmit meanings, not words, and the meanings are derived from
the experiences of the listener. While some people may have eidetic
memory for spoken sentences, few do. The test the way you describe it
only detects apparent support for your thesis; it’s like showing a
witness a picture of the suspect, and asking “Is this the man who
mugged you?” The court will throw out any such identification; what
is needed is a collection of pictures of similar-looking people, with the
witness being required to pick out the suspect’s face from among the
others. You would not get such perfect agreement in that kind of
test.

When I say that they will be the
same, I do not mean that physical measurements that you or someone else
could conduct will come out with the same readings. I mean (to repeat
what I said earlier) that a given person will perceive them as the same,
and that you will perceive their reports that they are the same. We are
not talking about the continua of physical phenomena, we are talking
about discrete perceptions, where these sounds or this sequence of marks
are perceived as this word or that word. Language and culture are
entirely on the binary side of the fence, however much their performance
is among the continua of physical phenomena.

Yes, we did have this discussion before. The reason you get agreement is
that you are passing all these varying sounds and constructions through a
filter that prefers to admit the familiar. What you get out of a binary
filter depends on exactly where you place the boundary between 1 and 0.
Each person says that something familiar was experienced; the others
agree; but there is no independent way to tell what they are agreeing
about (especially if you never vary what they are presented with).Each
person’s filter might be tuned a little differently, yet they will all
say “The same thing happened again.” .

But back to my point. My point is not the truth of your assertions, but
the fact that they require evidence and proof. They are not self-evident;
which shows that they are interpretations of reality rather than reality
itself. When we observe that people agree on communications, we do not
demonstrate that they have similar reference levels or perceptual input
functions. Those are theoretical entities, ways of explaining something
and not phenomena in themselves. We only demonstrate that there is
agreement. Agreement on what, we do not know from any simple experiment,
and we may never know. All we can do is propose models, try them out, and
see how well they predict what we observe.

I was asking whether the “social realities” discussed in
economics, linguistics, or sociology were somehow in a different category
from the “physical realities” we speak of such as electrons and
quarks. People who speak of social phenomena often speak as if they were
objectively real, rather than being interpretations by a human observer
(just as physicists speak of electrons and quarks). But as far as I can
see, all sciences, whether physical or social, are in the same boat when
it comes to knowing what is real. Scientists, like everyone else, know
only what their own perceptions tell them. Nothing you say here convinces
me otherwise.

I’ll repeat an account I have
summarized previously on the net. Eventually its significance will be
apparent. In the 19th century, one of the distinguishing features of the
dialect where I live, aside from retention of postvocalic r, was the
raised and centralized position of the first part of the diphthong /au/
in about, loud. (You hear this frequently in Canadian
dialects.) This had been gradually merging with the more open /a/ heard
in mainland dialects. This broader sound, along with loss of postvocalic
r (pahk the cah in Hahvahd Yahd), had spread from dialects south of
London over to the cities of the American colonies, and thence spread to
more rural areas. The older pronunciations persisted in only a few
regions, and were fading even there. However, after the whaling trade
died and as tourism became more of a factor around the turn of the
century, the traditional pronunciation began a resurgence. The really
puzzling thing was that the /ai/ diphthong came along with it, in words
like knife, slide, where it had never been recorded in any
dialect of English, certainly not in New England. In a study that Bill
Labov conducted in the early 1960s, it turned out that adolescents who
were leaving the Island for college or jobs on the mainland changed their
dialect to conform to that of summer visitors from New York and Boston,
while those who were looking ahead to making their livelihood here
continued to speak with the local dialect, only controlling its
distinctive features (as distinct from that of the visitors) with higher
gain, “more conservative than even the Menemsha lobster
fishermen.”

Here, we see evidence of people perceiving and controlling for norms, and
we see evidence for social processes by which norms
change.

Evidence, certainly, It is no less compelling than the evidence saying
that quarks and electrons exist. But you would not accept a physicist’s
claim to have observed quarks and electrons, any more than he would
accept your claim to have observed convergence of reference levels. What
you’re talking about is a very careful series of observations of
experiences, each linguist observing his or her own experiences and no
others, followed by an effort to put the observations into some
consistent language, and to check and cross-check the use of that
language until each person is satisfied (incorrectly) that he or she is
using it exactly as others use it, and finally proposing one or another
model to explain the agreed-upon observations.

You are confident as to what sound you mean by writing /ai/. But how do
you check to see if that is the same sound another linguist means by
writing that symbol? This can’t be settled by your saying the sound and
his writing /ai/, and vice versa, because each of you judges the sound
said by both of you through the same private input function which may or
may not be organized exactly as the other person’s is. You cannot compare
experiences. You can’t perceive changes in degrees of freedom that your
perceptual systems do not detect. Color-blind people can go through a
lifetime without realizing that they do not see the same wavelengths that
other people see (even though other people sometimes reveal their
confusion by using different words for the same color).

The most obvious reason that they
must be cumulative is evolutionary: they cannot have sprung into being
full-blown by some miracle when, say, a precocious subset of the
offspring of a band of hominids woke up one morning. Humans did not
always tie their shoelaces with bow knots, the arts of knot tying having
developed by an accumulation of learning, and some many generations
before that they did not put shoes on their feet.

Evolution is an explanatory model that requires evidence; it’s not a
given that we can invoke to explain other things. The observation you
describe is that the way people do things changes over time, from one
generation to the next. You might say that they learn from watching each
other. But is it necessary that something “accumulate” for this
to happen? Evolution of the genome is certain cumulative, because we know
that genes are literally passed from one individual to another, complete
with any cumulative changes. But all that is required for one person to
learn from another is to see another doing something new and wish to
reproduce it. Does the person learning in this way acquire all that the
other person had learned up to that point? That’s not only
impossible but unnecessary.

But this is all controlled without
attention, and though it is happening around us all the time, and even in
our own behavior, only rarely coming to awareness, it may be that you
have to spend a protracted period being a foreigner learning how to be a
native for this to be more than hearsay.

Something is missing from each of
these statements: an indication that the

statement is about a perception in the person making it.

And something yet more: that these are verifiable statements, which have
been verified by numerous people, and which are capable of test and
verification by yourself – if you are willing. But it cannot be done
alone.

As I said above, such verifications are not above suspicion, but my point
is still getting lost among the details. You say that these are
verifiable statements – and I do not for an instant doubt that you
perceive them to be verifiable. You perceive them as statements, and you
perceive that the experiences they are about satisfy what you perceive as
verifiability. Yet that is my point: not that the statements are
verifiable (or not) but that verifiability is one of your perceptions.
You are still in there looking at your own experiences. My point is that
NOTHING IS EXEMPT, however passionately you are convinced of the
objective existence of what you are describing. You think you have at
last transcended the barrier – and in the next moment you realize that
there is yet another level, and your impression of transcendance is
simply another perception. There is no place to stop this process – you
can only let it proceed to the end.

I
don’t know if the above three statements are true or

false. What I do know is that I hesitate to acquiesce to them, because
my

reaction is not “How true,” but “Wait a minute.” When
I say "Wait a

minute," I mean, “Is that really true?”

Find out. The keys to investigation are ready to hand. If you haven’t the
interest to investigate and find out, then “Is that really
true” is a rhetorical question covering disinterest at
least.

So you’re saying that the objective truth is there to be seen if only I
will look. If I don’t agree, it can only be because I am feigning
interest, or am too lazy to look at the evidence. In fact, you’re
offering these observations as evidence that our personal realities are
NOT “all perception,” but can somehow be checked against
Reality Itself. I suspect that in trying to make a point against
considerable resistance, you now find yourself standing in a rather
extreme position that you did not intend to occupy.

No one ever claimed that these
learning curves are a social reality, a cultural artifact. The rings and
arcs and following in lines of the CROWD program are precisely not
cultural artifacts, because they are universal, and indeed the model
shows why they are universal.

They are strictly cultural. In the Crowd society, for whatever reasons,
it is customary to follow the guru at a particular distance, and to avoid
collisions with obstacles (the model does not say where these customs
came from). This is what produces arcs and rings, in Crowd and in real
crowds. Since everyone wishes to remain at the same distance from the
guru, when the guru stops and they finish avoiding each other the
followers are all the same distance from the guru. They are on a circle
because points equidistant from a common point must lie on a circle
around that point. The parameters can easily be changed so each person
maintains a different distance from the guru. Then we will not see arcs
and rings, but a more or less ragged approximation of them, if anything
recognizeable.

Cultural norms, “social
realities” such as we are talking about, are in their nature not
universal, they are conventional, with the conventions differing
arbitrarily (or, rather, with historical contingency) from one another,
subject to variation and change governed by social factors such as the
“what kind of person I present myself to be to others, based on my
generalizations about what kinds of people there are” control of
self image that seems to be operative in the change in dialect described
earlier.

Behind this whole line of argument, it seems to me, is an earnest attempt
to prove something about the reality, the objective reality as opposed to
theoretical, of social phenomena. As logical and theoretical proposals,
as approaches to models of human interactions, your ideas seem quite
reasonable as I understand them. But there is too much of a flavor of
selecting evidence to support your position, of looking for positive
instances alone, and above all for suppressing the fact that these are
things that YOU are convinced of, that YOU perceive, that fit in with
YOUR reasoning. I have nothing against your promotion of what you think
are reasonable arguments, but I balk at the suggestion that you have (or
anyone has) been vouchsafed the ability to perceive reality itself. I
don’t think we are constructed in such a way as to make that possible –
and yes, I admit that that, too, is a model. But I know of no other model
than hangs together correctly with all the other models we use.

OK, I see your point, and I disagree with it. There is nothing in a
society to “establish” a norm but the behavior of the
individuals who make it up. From the standpoint of any individual, the
“norms”, I claim, are precisely those reference conditions that
person deduces from the average behavior of those around him. The person
adopts for himself (or rejects) what he believes to be social reference
signals that are like those that other people have adopted; he may do
this unconsciously simply through interacting with the other people, or
quite consciously and deliberately.

What is the alternative to saying that socially established norms are the
averages of the norms adhered to by the individuals in the society? It is
to say that there is something to enforce the norms other than the
understandings and actions of individuals. I can see grounds for
agreement between us here, but my feeling is that you would reject them
because they do not give society enough of an existence of its
own.

Of course not; it would not demonstrate that there is no slice of Cheddar
cheese on the far side of the moon, either. But statements are not
usually accepted as true by default, are they? I didn’t say that you have
no such model; I was just pointing out that to support a statement like
that, you need to use a model and cast the statement as a proposition,
not a fact. I’m trying to get this discussion moved into the realm of

informal logic alone, or pure reason, is enough to support the
plausibility of our claims? Finding evidence to support a position is
important, and so is finding evidence against it, but once that is done,
we have to look for an underlying organization that could produce what we
observe. Otherwise, our method of reasoning remains open to doubt.

And the same caveat applies, about drawing any conclusions from failure.
But we are not limited to construction of simulations. We can observe and
test people and gather the data that are prerequisite to modelling and
building a simulation – the data that any simulation would have to
replicate.

And after you have gone through that process, what? Do we make the
transition from skepticism to faith? You’re pissed off at amateurs having
opinions in your field. I don’t blame you, but I maintain that evidence,
however complete and hard-won, is very vulnerable to interpretation, the
more so if only positive evidence is considered and if it’s considered
only by people who have reason to stick together. What I’m suggesting is
that your evidence is very strong and quite admirable in its
thoroughness, but that it doesn’t prove anything about the reality of
socially established norms. That way of putting it is an interpretation
that is not forced on us. You have to have some reason other than the
evidence you have cited to prefer it.

The starting place for this in the
individual is generalization. That people generalize about others I take
as obvious. (A generalization is not a category, though it may employ
them, and it is not an abstraction, nor is it an
average).

I think that generalizations fit in with principles.

will, that people perceive the generalizations that they have made or
learned about others as norms to which (they perceive that) a given other
either conforms or disconforms. And they indicate to others their own
conformity to what they perceive as an accepted norm by means which

I think pretty much the same thing, except for the stage of perceiving
their generalizations about other people as norms. There is a missing
step in there, which I indicate by saying that people adopt perceptions
of other people’s norms as their own. There is a process of judgment and
active selection here, as I’m sure you’ll agree on reflection (and maybe
you said it in that sentence). I’m more likely to accept other people’s
norms as my own if I like or admire the other people, and I can certainly
think of many groups whose norms I despise and reject, even though I
think I can perceive them. There are people whose speech I emulate, and
those whose speech I eschew. We have a choice in selecting which society
to be part of, and which part of that society to identify with, if any.
This is not to deny unconcious processes, but just about any part of
experience can be either conscious or unconscious.

There is not as much space between us as there sometimes seems to be. I
think the main difference is that I have followed the logic of perception
to its final conclusion and am in process of recovering from the
experience, while you’re still resisting, wanting to preserve at least
your own area of expertise as dealing with facts, not perceptions and
interpretations. I don’t preserve any area of expertise as exempt from
the judgement that it’s a perception, my perception. Not even PCT. When
you’re willing to do that, too, we’ll be speaking the same

herself to membership in a local coterie of, frankly, rather rough kids,

The test the way you describe it only detects
apparent support for your thesis; it’s like showing a witness a picture
of the suspect, and asking “Is this the man who mugged you?”
The court will throw out any such identification; what is needed is a
collection of pictures of similar-looking people, with the witness being
required to pick out the suspect’s face from among the others. You would
not get such perfect agreement in that kind of test.

The comparison is utterly specious, Bill. Recall that these are
recordings of different people controlling their individual, internal
reference values for speaking in a way that corresponds (for them

proof. They are not self-evident; which shows that they are
interpretations of reality rather than reality itself.

When we observe that people agree on
communications, we do not demonstrate that they have similar reference
levels or perceptual input functions. Those are theoretical entities,
ways of explaining something and not phenomena in themselves. We only
demonstrate that there is agreement. Agreement on what, we do not know
from any simple experiment, and we may never know. All we can do is
propose models, try them out, and see how well they predict what we
observe.

OK. I am proposing that humans as control systems in the PCT model
identify CVs that others are controlling by the behavior we call
speaking, and they identify reference values with which those others are
controlling those CVs, and (if higher-level systems so demand) they may
adjust their own reference values for controlling those CVs to
“converge” with those according to which they perceive that the
others are controlling.

Do people identify CVs that others are controlling by their speaking? I
submit the existence of abundant evidence that children and adults learn
to speak the language that others around them speak. Do people identify
reference values with which those others control those CVs? Again, there
is abundant evidence awaiting a PCT explanation. Do they sometimes change
their existing reference values, acquired in one social context, so that
they come to speak in the same way that those in a new social context
speak? Once again, there is abundant evidence, though here there is
evidence of people sometimes retaining reference values from a prior
context (and being perceived as resisting change so that they continue to
speak differently).

I was asking whether the “social
realities” discussed in economics, linguistics, or sociology were
somehow in a different category from the “physical realities”
we speak of such as electrons and quarks. People who speak of social
phenomena often speak as if they were objectively real, rather than being
interpretations by a human observer (just as physicists speak of
electrons and quarks). But as far as I can see, all sciences, whether
physical or social, are in the same boat when it comes to knowing what is
real. Scientists, like everyone else, know only what their own
perceptions tell them. Nothing you say here convinces me
otherwise.

One difference is that there are grounds for believing that quarks
pre-exist humans and will exist after humans are gone, but there are no
grounds for believing that a given human “social reality” such
as the word “convergence” exists beyond the particular
people for whom it is real. That would seem to preclude any claim that
social realities are really real in Reality. Of course, there are
physicists who say that particles and strings and so forth are brought
into being by physicists agreements that they exist. I wouldn’t know. But
again, I don’t give two shakes of a dead goldfish tail about that.

Nonetheless, to an infant born into a family in a community, the language
and other social realities are pre-existing among many other CVs in the
environment that they learn to control.

Evidence, certainly, It is no less compelling
than the evidence saying that quarks and electrons exist. But you would
not accept a physicist’s claim to have observed quarks and electrons, any
more than he would accept your claim to have observed convergence of
reference levels. What you’re talking about is a very careful series of
observations of experiences, each linguist observing his or her own
experiences and no others, followed by an effort to put the observations
into some consistent language, and to check and cross-check the use of
that language until each person is satisfied (incorrectly) that he or she
is using it exactly as others use it, and finally proposing one or
another model to explain the agreed-upon observations.

You are confident as to what sound you mean by writing /ai/. But how do
you check to see if that is the same sound another linguist means by
writing that symbol? This can’t be settled by your saying the sound and
his writing /ai/, and vice versa, because each of you judges the sound
said by both of you through the same private input function which may or
may not be organized exactly as the other person’s is. You cannot compare
experiences. You can’t perceive changes in degrees of freedom that your
perceptual systems do not detect. Color-blind people can go through a
lifetime without realizing that they do not see the same wavelengths that
other people see (even though other people sometimes reveal their
confusion by using different words for the same color).

There’s a fundamental confusion here. We’re not talking about sounds in
some absolute sense. We’re talking about perceptions of difference. So
long as you avoid the data it is too easy to tie yourself up in logical
knots like this.

The most obvious
reason that they must be cumulative is evolutionary: they cannot have
sprung into being full-blown by some miracle when, say, a precocious
subset of the offspring of a band of hominids woke up one morning. Humans
did not always tie their shoelaces with bow knots, the arts of knot tying
having developed by an accumulation of learning, and some many
generations before that they did not put shoes on their
feet.

Evolution is an explanatory model that requires evidence; it’s not a
given that we can invoke to explain other things. The observation you
describe is that the way people do things changes over time, from one
generation to the next. You might say that they learn from watching each
other. But is it necessary that something “accumulate” for this
to happen? Evolution of the genome is certain cumulative, because we know
that genes are literally passed from one individual to another, complete
with any cumulative changes. But all that is required for one person to
learn from another is to see another doing something new and wish to
reproduce it. Does the person learning in this way acquire all that the
other person had learned up to that point?

No. Nor is that the claim. There is loss as well.

But this is all
controlled without attention, and though it is happening around us all
the time, and even in our own behavior, only rarely coming to awareness,
it may be that you have to spend a protracted period being a foreigner
learning how to be a native for this to be more than hearsay.

Something is missing from each of these
statements: an indication that the

statement is about a perception in the person making it.

And something yet more: that these are verifiable statements, which have
been verified by numerous people, and which are capable of test and
verification by yourself – if you are willing. But it cannot be done
alone.

As I said above, such verifications are not above suspicion, but my point
is still getting lost among the details. You say that these are
verifiable statements – and I do not for an instant doubt that you
perceive them to be verifiable. You perceive them as statements, and you
perceive that the experiences they are about satisfy what you perceive as
verifiability. Yet that is my point: not that the statements are
verifiable (or not) but that verifiability is one of your perceptions.
You are still in there looking at your own experiences. My point is that
NOTHING IS EXEMPT, however passionately you are convinced of the
objective existence of what you are describing. You think you have at
last transcended the barrier – and in the next moment you realize that
there is yet another level, and your impression of transcendance is
simply another perception. There is no place to stop this process – you
can only let it proceed to the end.

It is certainly possible to construct a logical argument that proves that
you are alone and isolated. If that is what you want to concern yourself
with, that is your prerogative. It is not what I want to concern myself
with.

No one ever claimed
that these learning curves are a social reality, a cultural artifact. The
rings and arcs and following in lines of the CROWD program are precisely
not cultural artifacts, because they are universal, and indeed the
model shows why they are universal.

They are strictly cultural. In the Crowd society, for whatever reasons,
it is customary to follow the guru at a particular distance, and to avoid
collisions with obstacles (the model does not say where these customs
came from). This is what produces arcs and rings, in Crowd and in real
crowds. Since everyone wishes to remain at the same distance from the
guru, when the guru stops and they finish avoiding each other the
followers are all the same distance from the guru. They are on a circle
because points equidistant from a common point must lie on a circle
around that point. The parameters can easily be changed so each person
maintains a different distance from the guru. Then we will not see arcs
and rings, but a more or less ragged approximation of them, if anything
recognizeable.

There is an important difference between what is cultural and what is
innate. What is cultural is not universal, because it is conventionalized
and institutionalized differently in different communities. What is
innate is universal because that is the way all human beings work. In the
CROWD universe, one “society” might differ from another in the
reference values for proximity to others, to the guru, and so on, but
whey would all form rings and arcs, follow in lines, and so on. This the
point that you ignored in the following:

Cultural
norms, “social realities” such as we are talking about, are in
their nature not universal, they are conventional, with the conventions
differing arbitrarily (or, rather, with historical contingency) from one
another, subject to variation and change governed by social factors such

to an earlier sketch of how these values can converge as people interact
while controlling a system concept of “self”. It’s a suggestion
of how the process might be modeled.

As logical and theoretical proposals, as
approaches to models of human interactions, your ideas seem quite
reasonable as I understand them. But there is too much of a flavor of
selecting evidence to support your position, of looking for positive
instances alone, and above all for suppressing the fact that these are
things that YOU are convinced of, that YOU perceive, that fit in with

disturbances. Reference values may be set by systems that control norms.
Systems that control norms do so with varying reference values – more or
less of the given norm – and with varying gain. When you have a socially
established norm, individuals can conform to it (adopt it as a reference
value) or not, electively. When the individual does conform to a norm,
others who know the norm recognize it and perceive the social
significance of their conforming to it; when the individual does not,
that, too, has a perceived social significance. There are frequently
competing norms, each of which constitutes nonconformity to the other(s),
each of which along with other norms is associated with the “kind of
person” who acts that way, so that in addition to the above a person
may conform to a norm which is perceived as conflicting with the first
norm, and this may be perceived by others as a particular way of
controlling the first norm (aversively). No averaging can possibly
approach an understanding of this, and the comparison to the learning
curve business is, as Perry Mason used to say, irrelevant and
immaterial.

In every case that has been studied, there are features of dialect
difference that everybody is aware of because they talk about them-- the
shibboleths – and other features of dialect difference that are not
brought to awareness in conversation and which people notice only if you
bring it to their attention. This is important for research purposes,
because you want to have an interaction with them using words that
exemplify which way the speaker goes with the dialect differences, and if
the shibboleths come up they might speak in a way that they think is
appropriate for talking with this interviewer or linguist or whatever, or
might get self-conscious about speaking the “local” dialect
version of the shibboleths (like pronouncing the r in corn), etc. But
people changing their norms may actually refuse awareness of it. My
daughter did.
