Subjective Testing for Controlled Variables

[From Rick Marken (981030.1440)]

Bill Powers (981030.1055 MST) to me:

So your hatred of "Republicans" (a misleadingly oversimplified
label) implies a desire to control them, coupled with an inability
to do so.

Right on all counts (though the House Republicans have managed to
make this oversimplification a tad less misleading by voting
unanimously -- that's 100%, no exceptions -- that lying about
consensual sex is a high crime and misdemeanor while depriving
poor children of government welfare support is not;-).

Love

That leaves many tens of millions of Republicans to be heard from. Are they
all alike, like Jews?

Outrage is fine if it leads to effective action. If it doesn't, it's just a
hobby.

from. Are they all alike, like Jews?

My talk about "Republicans" was a reference to the political
label of one type of government representative. I was stereo-
typing people who are in the _business_ of being stereotyped.
I don't think there is anything personally wrong with all the
representatives who call themselves "Republicans". All I meant
to say was that the unanimous Republican House vote on impeachment
makes the voting choice (for those of us who want to live in a
decent society) very easy; just don't vote for the person who calls
themselves a "Republican". I know this approach will have me voting
against some nice people and voting for some jerks. But that's
politics. I'd rather be represented by a jerk who knows wrong-doing
(poverty, political witch hunts) when he sees it than by a nice
person who thinks it's appropriate to vote to impeach a perfectly
decent leader for lying about a private love affair.

Outrage is fine if it leads to effective action. If it doesn't,
it's just a hobby.

It's definitely just a hobby with me. I don't think there is much
I can do that would be effective. I plan to vote and encourage
everyone I know to do the same. But the only really effective action
I think I can take at the moment is to keep doing PCT and watch my
parkin' meters.

Best
