There have been several posts recently about the future of PCT & CSG-L. I
have a problem with the statement that when we prove that PCT is correct,
then the problems of understanding and acceptance will be reduced or
go away. If this statement were the result of applying the Test For The
Controlled Variable to some key group, I would feel better about it.
I suggest the following: Access your imagination loop. This is allowed
under PCT. Visualize a time a few years or decades hence when the basics
of PCT have just been proven by rigorous modelling by our faithful
researchers. Every "i" has been dotted, every "t" crossed. PCTer's now
have their Laws of Perceptual Control....
Why will anyone care about the joy of a small group of PCTer's? Why should
those who are happy with behaviorism, cognitivism, AI, and so on, suddenly
do any different than they do now when PCT is mentioned?
One of the basic concepts of PCT is that everyone is a living independent
control system operating from beliefs and world concepts held at the
System Concepts level. Completing the proof of PCT will not even change
the System Concepts of a PCTer, because he wouldn't have completed the
proof if he did not already believe. As to everyone else for whom PCT is a
disturbance, it will remain a disturbance, and they will do what they do
now: If they do not perceive it as upsetting their reference levels, they
will ignore it. If they do see it as a greater disturbance now that it is
better documented, they will resist the disturbance even more strongly, as
PCT says they must if they are functioning well as control systems.
My statement is unscientific and hypothetical, but isn't it true to the
precepts of PCT?? PCT research is essential, and I, too, want to see a lot
more of it done. My position is that no holders of other theories will be
thrown into a Reorganization State by the completion of the basic PCT
research. Am I missing something here?
