visual analog computer chip

[From Bill Williams UMKC 4 September 2002 10:40 AM CST]

Looking a new books received by the science and engineering library today, I saw
_Cellular Neural Networks and Visual Computing_ by Chua, Leon O. and Roska,
Tamas. 2002 Cambridge University Press. The authors describe a technology in
which a chip receives a visual input through a 200 x 200 array of on chip photo
sensors, processes this visual input using _analog_ computation, computing in a
3 x 3 neighborhood using boolean and linear functions. The result is a
processing capacity close to 10 to the 15th power, or "peta" flops per second.
