[From Rick Marken (971125.1550)]
Martin Taylor said:
Bottom line--auditory feedback is clearly used to control
_something_ about speech,
I snottily replied:
I agree, but I think it's better to say "_something_ about the
auditory feedback is clearly controlled". See the difference?
Martin Taylor (971125 17:25) patiently responds:
Yes, I see the difference. You think it is the environmental
feebdack loop that is controlled. I think it is a perception
of some aspect of the speech that is controlled.
OK. I see the problem. You were using the term "auditory feedback"
to refer to the effect of articulation on heard speech -- the
output-perception link. I was thinking of "auditory feedback" as
the heard speech itself. Given your meaning of the term "auditory
feedback", your statement is perfectly fine with me: we do use the
effect of articulation on heard speech to control some (perceived)
aspect(s) of speech.
Sometimes it's a little hard for us Americans to understand
colloquial Canadian. Sorry. Remember, I'm the PCT policeman,
not the PCT mounty;-)
Best
