Why They Cry

My copy of Plooij's book _Why They Cry_ has been in the hands of a new
family for the past 6 months, as their child grew from 2 months to 8
months now. The father tells me that the book does indeed predict and
track changes in the child. This kid is right on schedule. He (the father)
is looking forward to the Sequence level.

Has anyone else here put their copy of the book to use?

Sincerely, Hank Folson

Does anyone know how to obtain the Ploojs' book _Why They Cry_? I can't
find it on any of the online bookstore sites. I want to get copies for my
daughter and for my brother-in-law.

The reference section in Bill's new book states:

Why They Cry
Hetty van de Rijt and Frans X. Plooij, (1996) Child development book
outlining the growth of nine levels of perception during the first year.
Thorsons, London. Tel: +44 181 307 4403, Fax: +44 181 307 4629.

I know, because I put it there. British list price is ten pounds.

On Monday, I plan to call Anita Zih at that number and order 20 copies to
be sent by surface. I expect to keep the book in stock until the American
version is published. My onerous price is $20 ea + $5 for shipping. So you
can deal direct or ask me for it. I'll get them in just over a month. At
the moment, I cant find a single copy in the house.

I tried sending this direct to you, Dag, but it bounced back on me,
so I'm sending it through the "public domain." Sorry to others on
the Net.

Hi, Dag! Long time no see, er, talk.

If you still have copies of Hetty and Frans' book, Why They Cry, I'd
really like to get a copy. I originally thought I'd wait til Harper
Collins came out with a US edition, but in calling them to see when
that might be and/or if I could encourage that process, they claimed
not to have any record of it.

I don't have your address handy -- scratch that, it's probably in the
Intro to CSGNet message that you post each month. In any rate, maybe
you could send me a quick post to tell me if there are any copies left;
include your current address and I'll send a check for $25 right off.

Thanks a bunch.

I thought I came across "Why They Cry" on BarnesandNoble.com.

I have checked and find that a search on "Why They Cry" at
www.barnesandnoble.com yields nothing. A search on "Plooij" yields the 1984
on Chimpanze mothers and infants -- highly recommended, also available from
the source:

Ablex Publishing Corp.
55 Old Post Road No. 2
P.O. Box 5297
Greenwich, CT 06831-0504, USA
Tel. 203-661-7602
Fax: 203-661-0792

List is $70, but they immediately offered a 40% discount.
With shipping it cost me $49 something.

"Why They Cry" is not referenced anywhere on the Internet, as far as I can
tell.

I just called Thorsons in London to order 20 copies of Why They Cry.

I called the international sales department. Anita Zih was out for the day,
but Sally Stillman was there. She checked stock in her computer: 4 copies
left from 1996 print run. No reprint schedule. I hope there is some
mistake, but certainly requested the four copies. (Spoken for by that
middle of the alphabet guy and our CSG president-elect. No more orders
taken by me at this time).

I'll cc Frans to alert him and see if he has more info.

From Frans, direct:

=========================
Dear Dag,

No there is no mistake, but the book is sold out quicker than I thought. The
publishers and I disagreed on the promotion needs and possibilities.
Basically their promotion was nil, because they think a continental
(European) author with an unspeakable name cannot promote a book in England
and so they did not do a thing to promote the book. On the other hand,I
declared myself prepared to come over to England to do interviews and the
like if they would orgnanise it. Without any promotion the book sold itself,
but I am searching for a way to promote it better. I had the English
publisher give back the rights to me. Either the USA publisher gets England
and the Commonwealth, if they are willing to do better promotions, or I do
something through the internet and have the book printed myself. First I
wait and see how the people at Random House are going to react. If they
react positively, the book should be available in the USA soon.

Best wishes, Frans

I am glad Frans is in charge of his own destiny and has been able to take
back the rights. It is always a pleasure to see a person control well.

Hi, Dag --

You might ask Frans if he would like Alice to handle his book on a trial
basis. I think she would really put some effort into it.

Bill

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Frans Plooij's "Why They Cry." I'd like a copy for myself and one for my sister and brother-in-law who have a six week old. I'd like to introduce them both to PCT since they're both doctors and he's a neurologist, and I figure this would be an apt way.

I think I remember Dag saying that it went out of print a while back, but that Frans was working on getting it published through a new publisher.

I'd also like to know how to get a hold of the essay Bill wrote on the "Origins of Purpose."
